Tues 5/26/2004 It is with great sadness that we inform everyone of the passing of Walter Bethel of Palmetto Point this past Sunday.  Walter was the art teacher at the high school in Palmetto Point and owned Walter's Native Arts and Crafts.  He was a wonderful man with a talent for painting vibrant Bahamian style artwork on canvases and driftwood.  Walter would travel to the states for festivals, displaying his artwork and the artwork of his students.  He seemed to love his work.  Walter is the brother of the famous Dr. Seabreeze.  Our condolences to the Bethel family for their loss.

Mon 5/17/2004 Fire update....The fire burned itself out the same day it started - no homes were damaged due to the diligence of the community.  But there is sad news from Tarpum Bay - I've been getting requests for information.  Nothing much is known right now, so here's the article from the Nassau Guardian:

Teen killed by cousin,  BY VANESSA C ROLLE, Guardian Staff Reporter

Something went terribly wrong in a Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera, home on Saturday, resulting in a boy being shot and killed by his teenage cousin. The fatal shooting occurred on Culmer's Lane, off Lord Street, shortly after 6:00 pm.

Police Liaison Officer Supt. Hulan Hanna said that 14-year-old Ormand Henfield, a resident of Conch Shell Alley, was found dead lying on the floor of the living room with gun shot wounds to the head. His 16-year-old cousin, who was not identified, and who is a resident Culmer's Lane, was assisting the police in this matter he said. A team of detectives from Nassau was dispatched to Eleuthera on Sunday to carry out further investigation.

According to Mr. Hanna, the boys were preparing to go to a basketball game and somehow came in possession of the shot gun. He once again issued a warning to licensed gun holders to ensure that their weapons remain in a safe and are "sufficiently" secured in a place away from children, young people, curious people, and criminals. He advised members of the public that if they happen to come in contact with a weapon or discover a gun, not to touch it and to always assume that it just might be loaded. He further advised that youngsters who find a gun should notify their parents or the licensed holder so that the weapon can safely be unloaded and properly secured out of harm's way. The police should also be immediately called in such instances, he said, so that the weapon could be moved to a place of safety

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families during this sad time.

In other news, it's Youth Awareness month and this past weekend there was an awards presentation in Deep Creek.  Awards were presented for bible study, academics, and sports.  The Speaker of the House attended and there was a healthy local representation.  It's good to see the parents and friends support the kids!

Wed 5/12/2004 Breaking news from Tarpum Bay resident...  Fire bell goes off in Tarpum Bay.  Bush fire burning out of control, comes dangerously close to the back of houses, fueled by high winds, Tarpum Bay's only "Fire Pump" is non operational.  As fire truck gets special permission to leave airport and arrives in TB its water capacities are not enough to douse the flames. It stands by "On call", in case fire threatens houses.  (3:39 PM  Weds May 12)  1 water truck is pumping sea water and carrying it to spray the bush down. Currently still out of control and spreading, spot fires are also occurring just beyond the main flames.  This fire is burning from about half a mile before the school to behind Bertha's Go-Go ribs and out into the bush....
Fri. 5/7/2004 Palmetto Point is making plans for their homecoming at the end of this month.... This occurs over Memorial Day weekend, don't miss it, lot's of fun!  Here's the schedule so far:

Wed. 5/5/2004 Several excited tourists have happened upon the filming of director Stewart Raffill's new film, "Three" and snapped a few pictures.  This movie starring Billy Zane, of Titanic fame, is being filmed in a secret location on Eleuthera.  What an eventful thing to be happening on our island!
