Alas, I'm back home in the states. My visits are always too much fun
and too short. I got a good full day and night in at
Point Homecoming on Saturday. I started at the site at around 1pm
and got to enjoy the floating bar - a dangerous place because of all the
free tequila shots going around!! It was an absolutely gorgeous
day! Early in the day, I got to watch the Roots Junkanoo dance team
practice for the evening's performance. Dr. Seabreeze played
acoustical calypso music in the mid afternoon. As the evening wore
on, the Brilanders took the stage and surprised me with several Jimmy
Buffet tunes (they toured with him one summer) and my favorite Beres
Hammond song - Rock Away. 'Sweetboy' Leroy Butler (lead singer for
the Baha Men, joined the Brilanders for a song, a pleasant surprise.
Then someone pointed out T'rez Hepburn in the crowd and I went over to
meet her and get her autograph. When she got on the stage the place
really began to rock! And, as per usual, I ended up dancing on the
stage... I don't know why that always happens! I apologize to you
who had to witness that! After T'rez, Kirkland Bodie came on and
continued working the crowd. KB really encouraged audience
participation - the night was a blast!

Went to Palmetto Point Homecoming last night. Way too much
fun. The site looks fabulous! I got there early so I had the
opportunity to watch Count Bernadino practice with the Brilanders. I
got my favorite drink... sky juice... a.k.a. gin and coconut. For
dinner I had the most delicious dish... grilled conch. It's conch,
onions, tomatoes, bananas, sour, black pepper corns, cooked on a grill in
a foil packet, creating its own broth.. yummy!
The festivities got off to a late start due to some electrical problems, but after the "grand opening" with words from the homecoming committee, members of parliament, and the tourism office - the entertainment started. The Rum Runners from south Eleuthera did some rake 'n scrape, followed by a quick set from the Brilanders and then out came Pepper, the fire dancer. She really got the crowd going with her acrobatics and fire tricks. She was joined afterwards by the Limbo man. This was Leroy - lead singer for the Baha Men. Leroy is an energetic man, doing aerial back and front flips around the stage. He set up the limbo stick and got some audience participation, with one of the local girls doing quite well. Then he got on to his grand finale. He set his limbo stick up on 2 Kalik bottles. He not only went under the stick, he did the equivalent of leg pushups under the limbo bar. After this, Count Bernadino came on stage. He brought his steel drum front and center and did a mini concert on the drum, performing such songs as "My Way" and "Marianne". . He gave the crowd information on making the drum from the bottom of an oil barrel. He continued on with singing his classic songs of "Hot, hot, hot", "Sugar", and "My Philosophy".

Went up south to Island School today to pick up a friend, Dennis, and go
fishing. I got to do a tour of Island School while waiting on
Dennis. This is a really interesting place. The school is
pretty much self sufficient. They are off the power grid and make
their own electricity thru solar and wind. They make diesel fuel
from cooking oil from the cruise ships. They grow many of their own
vegetables on site. They try to utilize native materials when
building. They have a large cobia farm off shore. It's really
a neat operation.
On the way south, we stopped at Davis Harbour and checked out the facilities. This location has great dockage with water and electric hookup. We went fishing off of Cape Eleuthera - so I also got to see the Cape Eleuthera Marina - this too is a nice facility with good docks. Hopefully I will have contact and rate information soon. Anyhow, thought I'd share some of our pix from today's entertainment. My favorite moment is when Dennis speared a moray eel and handed it up to us. Somehow it got off the spear before getting into the cooler and much "dancing" occurred on deck!!!
Community Assistance request: While at Island School, I met a young teacher who is very involved with the community in the deep south. She, and others, are trying to assist one of the local girls to further her education and they are looking for any assistance anyone can give. If you want to truly reach out and help someone, this is one way to do so. Here is her story: For the past three years, faculty at The Deep Creek Middle School in
South Eleuthera have been working to send our students to U.S. private
high schools. We currently have students from Eleuthera on scholarships at
schools throughout the Northeast U.S. (Proctor, Kimball Union, Lawrence
Academy, etc.) One of our 9th grade students has just received a
scholarship to Holy Cross, a private high school in Connecticut. We are
still $7200 short for her tuition and are now actively recruiting
sponsors. Any amount of assistance would be very appreciated! Julie is our
9th grade class president, active in sports and the community, and is also
an honor roll student. She has so much potential, and we are all hoping to
help her make this wonderful opportunity a reality for her. |

The weather in Eleuthera has been wonderful. Clear, sunny days -
with a healthy wind off the ocean side. The waves out by James Point
are crashing into the cliffs and making white clouds of spray that must go
50 feet into the air! I stopped by the Palmetto Point homecoming
site today. The new bar is near complete and quite impressive.
There's a ground floor bar and a second story bar - that I hear is the VIP
bar - don't know what that means... but I'll find out! I've been
asked to help tend bar - so I may do this Thursday night. The
floating bar has not yet been built... but should be soon. The water
is still coolish, but bearable. We went snorkeling around Ten Bay
today. The water was a little cloudy. There were huge schools
of baby pin fish. We also probably saw a dozen health sized groupers
under the ledges - and quite a few skates. There were some small
clearish-white jelly fish - but they didn't sting.
