I am sitting in Deep Creek right now. The homecoming site has just
opened for the day and I can hear the boom of Bahamian music wafting thru
the settement. It makes me antsy - I want to wander to the school
and check it out. Today is a holiday here in the Bahamas, it's
Labour Day. The skies are overcast and it is quite windy.
There have been some sprinkles of rain. Hopefully the weather will
hold out for homecoming tonight and the Morgan Heritage concert in
Governor's. I went to the opening ceremonies for the Deep Creek
homecoming last night. There wasn't a huge crowd - but there were a
good number of locals. It seemed like "daddy's night" last night.
I saw lots of fathers wandering around with one or two children close by.
There was a hoola hoop contest and a dance contest (for young and old -
for girls and guys). There were quite a lot of food stalls - most
focusing on conch, crab, and barbeque. There was also a good
selection of souses to choose from.
I have discovered land crab and am hooked!!! I have eaten crab at
least 5 of the last 7 days. My choice is boiled - maybe with some
dough or some mashed potatoes. I can sit for well over an hour
working thru the fins, biters and body of the crab. And I LOVE the
fat.
Point homecoming was last weekend. I attended Friday and Sunday
nights. There was some technical difficulty with the sound on Friday
night so the Brilanders only played once. Spice put on a good show
too. Then on Sunday the Brilanders played before and after Funky D.
Funky D came off the stage and performed in and among the crowd,
encouraging audience participation. The people in attendance at
Point got to hear many of his new songs from an album he will be releasing
next month some time. No one has heard him perform these songs yet,
so this was a big privilege. I thought the new stuff sounded great
and am looking forward to getting one of his CDs when they get released. |

I am writing from Rock Sound right now. We had a short, heavy
downpour this morning. It's breezy and muggy out now. I've
been on the island for a little over 2 weeks. There's lots going on
here right now. Early during my visit we had some excitement with a
"crash" landing of a Bahamas Air plane at the Governor's Harbour airport.
No one was hurt in the landing, there were minor injuries while evacuating
the plane. The left landing gear broke off during landing and the
plane tipped to its side. There was lots of smoke and the airport
was shut down for 3 days due to the plane blocking the runway. A
crane was brought in from Cotton Bay and the plane was tilted back upright
and leveled by placing its wing on a flatbed. The plane was carried
down the runway by the tow truck and parked in the parking area near
customs. Wood framing was used to chock up the bad side of the plane
so repairs could be done.
Election fever has taken over the island. Yellow and Red are
everywhere - flags on cars, t-shirts, posters... Rallys are occurring
almost nightly. I am amazed at the number of people and the
intensity that is involved with this election.
There are 2 movies currently being filmed in Eleuthera. The
Sirens of Eleuthera stars Antonio Sabada and James Brolin. Fool's
Gold stars Donald Southerland, Kate Hudson, and Matthew McConnaughy.
I encountered both movie crews in Cupid's Cay last week. Sirens of
Eleuthera was actively filming, Fool's Gold was setting up for a shoot in
the harbour the following day.

Harbour Island hosted its first Backyard Party. I thoroughly
enjoyed this festival. It was not too big, like regatta is.
The food was phenomenal. I drank sky juice and ate conch fritters,
whelk and curve salad and conch salad. Miss Daisy entertained the
crowd with her comedy routine. The Brilanders, Sparkles, and Geno D.
partied down with good Bahamian music.

I got to check out the new liquor store on Cupid's Cay. I had
heard nothing but great stuff about this place and I will tell you first
hand it's true. This store has a great wine selection - and the
prices are fantastic. There are quite a few selections of 1.5 litre
bottles of wine in the $11-18 price range. These are wines with
corks - not screw tops!!!! The store is across from Ronnie's in a
building that was ruins just a year ago but has been restored and
renovated, keeping its historical value. They did a fantastic job.
Somewhere I have before pix of this building, when I find them, I'll post
them.
