Wed 8/25/2004 Oh, I've been bad... got back from Eleuthera and haven't written an ounce!  But my excuses... excitement has taken over as I try to get my house plans together for building in Rainbow... this is going to be challenging.  For example, what is my elevation, front to back? I need to know this, since I have to excavate out (my garage will be below ground) - and everyone I talk to says all you need to know is your corner markers... but you see, the road is about 8 feet below the front edge of my property - so I need to know how much to excavate... Then, I am involved with the floor plans... how big should I make it?  It's cheaper to make it bigger now than to try to add on later... Then, how large should my cistern be? ... I'd rather make a bigger cistern now then run out of water and buy later... If my garage is under my house, then I need to make sure the cistern walls and garage walls are extensions of the upper walls so there's support.... How do I get water to the property to enable the workers to make concrete?  What about power?  How much is it going to cost me to run each additional pole to reach my property... and on and on... I may write a book to help others out in the future.....    Then... Hurricane Charley.  Yes, everything my family and I own was in some part of the path of this storm... From my property and my parents RV and boat in the Florida Keys - to my boat near Punta Gorda, to my house in Lake Mary... I was without power for 6 days...  But it taught me 2 things... (1)  A generator is a must (thus I will have one in Eleu (this will probably be my initial source of power too - but where will I store the thing?) and (2) The primary point of failure for most homes in Charley's path was the garage door - this would blow in, thus allowing wind to come in and blow off the roof.  I think I'll do two single doors - both reinforced.

So... this entry is going to be a hodge-podge of the past month's happenings in Eleuthera....  Some things are behind the times, but worth showing...

PS.  I have added a new page... We now have an "Eleusive Items" page... This page has an Arts & Crafts page where anyone with Eleuthera-oriented art work or crafts can list their items for sale.  And it also has a Books page where you can purchase Eleuthera-oriented books such as "The Elusive Beaches of Eleuthera" - that marvelous beach combing book that is a MUST for anyone traveling around Eleuthera.
