Here are some pictures of the rage near Hidden Beach,
Rainbow Bay last week. Also, this Friday is Guy Fawkes Day.
Tarpum Bay will have a Guy Fawkes celebration during the evening
hours. This festival includes the burning of effigies of the
infamous Guy Fawkes, who was executed along with others in the conspiracy
to blow up the House of Parliament, England in 1605. I will have
pictures of the different Guys and the bon fires this weekend.

Back from Eleuthera... got my pictures developed of my property being
cleared... see below and more under Fordis Moncur, on my
Construction link to the left. Of course, as my luck has it, I got a
good case of poison wood from when I was traipsing around on my lot before
I called Fordis out. That'll teach me! I understand there was
quite a rage on the Ocean side today. Early this morning huge waves
were crashing across the glass window bridge and surrounding cliffs.
Several power poles were knocked over and blocked part of the
highway. A heavy, misty haze covers the north and west shores of the
island.
George Major's pizza business is doing pretty well. He's been making lots of pizzas and delivering them - the store front should open soon for customers. George is full of energy for this project. Since he spent his college years in New York, he's got a good taste for real, New York pizza. Check him out if you're staying near Tarpum Bay. Also - coming up soon: the Haynes Library Open House and 9th Annual
Arts and Crafts Fair Day in Governor’s Harbour, November 27th from 10

Went by George Major's new internet cafe and pizza parlour last night. He should be opening soon for the internet cafe, but he's already taking orders for pizza. The building is definitely shaping up inside.. what an exciting thing for George! As for the pizza... my first night here he delivered a sample pie. Very professional, with the pizza box and all.... and what a crust! Yummy!!! He's got the crust down pat, and a very good sauce and cheese topping. It will be fun to see what Bahamian toppings he offers in addition to the traditional toppings - lobster, conch, pineapple... Wanted to go kayaking today near Cocodimama's - it was beautiful and calm around Tarpum Bay - however, when we got north, the wind was blowing and it was way too rough, so we went hunting for beach treasures on the Ocean side near the GHB airport. We did get some good wood for painting, some interesting bottles, and some plastic trash for crafts. We went to JC for Billy and Brenda Stubb's barbeque (we wanted the conch and rice or crab and rice most of all!) We stopped at Lee's Cafe in JC for her macaroni and cheese. And we got a Kalik at Burrow's Liquors in Governor's. I attempted to take video with my camera again... Last time I got great video, but the file was too large to put on this page. This time, I lowered the quality and got a significantly smaller file, however, the quality is not great. Tonight at Elvina's I'll try the middle quality. Anyhow, you get to see my poorer quality film, because I know those far away will enjoy it anyhow!

| Tue 10/12/2004 | Had a nice long weekend away from the
computer! Friday we headed down north to explore Briland during the
day and experience Briland's homecoming during the night. We went
over the Glass Window Bridge and got some good pictures for those of you
who are curious as to what it looks like now. Then we borrowed a
friend's golf cart and wandered around Harbour Island. We poked thru
the Coral Sands Hotel, where they are doing some sprucing up and roof
repair after the hurricanes. We explored down paths to see beaches
that were somewhat beaten up, yet still beautiful. There were all
sorts of stalls along Bay Street, there was a bouncing castle for the
kids, fresh conch salad was being made on the spot, 100 JAMZ was there,
the bar was open.... It was a beautiful day.
Saturday, we went back to Briland in the evening. Eleuthera Express played - I must say, they didn't sound very good. I talked with Butch (in the band) and he said it was because Briland didn't provide the proper connections for electric and they were severely under powered. Someone got them some more extension cords, and they plugged into several different homes and businesses, and sounded somewhat better later on. I've heard them at other locations and they are a really good band - so this was really a shame. However, it was still a fun night of music, with an impromptu addition of a young lady from Eleuthera who performed a few Bob Marley tunes with the band. The streets were much more crowded Saturday than on Friday. Something I feel the homecoming committee should pay more attention to next year, is providing more trash cans and attending to the public bathrooms on the government dock. I also think it is important that they encourage live music, instead of making this a pure drinking occasion. Sunday I went back on my property and tried to find those darn corners again. Still no success, so on Monday I had Fordis Moncur (you can find out about his services under the construction link on this page) show up with his machine and scrape all the brush off my land and level out a lot of the rock. Now I can run a straight line and look for those corners again. I got some great pictures - but they're in the film camera - so you'll get to see those after I get them developed in the States. I've done some more adjusting with my plans now that I can see the lay of the land and I think the plans are ready to go to an architect. I've learned a lot about cesspits and cisterns - but I still want to learn more so I can make sure this aspect is right. Monday afternoon, we went to Gaulding Cay for the traditional Discovery Day picnic put on by one of the churches in Gregory Town. This event is open to everyone, and is free - however, it is a kind gesture to donate something to the church while there. The day was a little overcast, which kept it cool. There was plenty of food - barbeque chicken, crab and rice, mac and cheese, potato salad, and corn salad. The jug of gin and coconut went quickly followed by the Bacardi Razz, gin and juice and jug wine. The kids were invited up to the DJ stand to recite the alphabet and times tables. The rest of the time the DJ had the tunes spinning and everybody moving. The children spent the day on tree swings and swimming in the calm waters. |

| Thu 10/7/2004 | I finally got into the water today at
Jack's Bay. Brrr.... the water is starting to get chilly (but I'm a
wimp). We did some snorkeling; however, the visibility was terrible
- the wind is off the sea side, but the waves were kicking up the sand,
and I'm sure that the past hurricanes didn't help any. The reef
looked rough. I think there was some damage due to the storms.
Got some good beach combing in. Lots of nice driftwood and sponges
on the beach. On the way to Jack's Bay we explored some to the
south. We went to Wemsys Bight to find out more about their
homecoming. I guess they've scaled it way back in respect of the
past hurricanes. They're having a fashion show and stage show and a
DJ. There'll be food stalls. We did find out that the Rum
Runners (mostly Haitian Rake-n-scrape band out of the south) plays each
weekend at Club9000 in Green Castle. I got plenty of pictures of
Waterford, Wemsys Bight, and Green Castle. I'll be updating the
settlements page with this when I return in 2 weeks.
Yesterday I went down north to meet Fordis Moncur from Bogue to discuss scraping my land. I had spent quite a bit of Monday traipsing thru the bush trying to find my back 2 markers of my property in Rainbow Bay. I found the front 2, but could never find the back. So, I decided to have someone come in and "scrape" my land. The bush is kind of low, as I am near the Ocean. But there are lots of rocks and holes and the low bush is dense. Scraping will eliminate the bush and level out the land. Hopefully then, I can get a straight shot to the back corners and find the monuments. Fordis will bring in some big equipment on Tuesday to get the job done... watch for pictures! Anyhow... I did snap some pictures of the road damage done by the hurricane in JC. |

| Tue 10/5/2004 | Hi All. I'm writing from Tarpum Bay today. I had a wonderful day!!! This morning I visited with Kevin Cooper of Rock Sound. Kevin is a very talented, world renowned impressionistic artist. He shows his paintings all over the world. I had the opportunity to visit his home and garage studio where he paints. The scent of oil paints and canvas wafted thru the air while American folk music played in the background. He is currently working on a sizeable piece of palm trees and beach. He pulled some other fabulous finished pieces out for us to enjoy. Look for a web page on his works coming soon.... Then, this evening we attended a reception in Rock Sound for the Mission House. The Antiquities Monuments and Museums Corporation donated $25,000 to assist with this worthwhile cause. The South Eleuthera Mission House will consist of a museum for the preservation of historical documents and artifacts, a library and resource center available to all for reference and learning, a computer room and training program offering students and individuals of all ages opportunities to improve themselves, and an environmental area to help Bahamians learn about the ecology of their islands and the preservation and protection of their natural resources for future generations. The reception was quite well attended by the community and a light dinner was served afterwards. It's a great thing to see the community come together and support endeavors such as the Mission House. | ||||||||||||
